- BANDWE SCHOOL ADDITION -

Help us build needed housing for the orphans at our Bandwe school near Kampala, Uganda.

       Up until recently, we operated two schools for needy grade school age children near Kampala, one in Gabba, the other in Bandwe. Last fall, we combined the two schools into one at our Bandwe location to more easily meet budget demands with the higher cost of living, with food and gas increasing everywhere. At the same time our school in Gabba was only a rental and the landlords increased our rent making things very difficult. By our owning the Bandwe property, the decision to combine the two schools was a no brainer, so to speak.

      By combining the two schools our enrollment has jumped from 180 to 320 students. Previously, 18 students had lived full-time on site, now we have 60 children with some sleeping on the floors of their classrooms or three to a bed. As you can imagine this has caused us to find a way to expand. After a discussion with our board, we have decided to build a second floor onto the south side of our school building. The additional space created by this addition will enable us to provide dorm rooms for the now 60 boys and girls who live on the property and some much needed teacher housing as well.

      This project will involve two phases -

       The first will involve removal of the existing roof and rafters, strengthening of posts and support beams, pouring of cement upper floor, and installation of the stairway. This phase will begin on April 1 of 2023 while the students are on break.

      The second phase will involve building of upper walls, replacing of the rafters and roofing above second floor,  installing doors and windows, electrical, a fence / railings, skim coating and painting of walls, and purchasing of bunk beds and mattresses.  This phase can be completed while the children are in school and should begin in May of 2023.

      Orphans -

      As you may be aware, our Bandwe school consists of about 60% orphans. A majority live in the community with extended family or with a remaining single parent. As mentioned before, 60 of our children have no place to call home. That is why this project is quite urgent. The total cost for each phase is - P1 $18,000 and P2 - $20,000. At this point a little over $10,000 has come in and has been wired to the school director (pastor Moses) to begin by April 1. Also, an amount of $18,000 has been promised as well towards this project, leaving us a balance of $10,000 as of April 23, 2023.
